club history

Manchester City Football Club was founded in 1880 as St. Mark (West Gorton). It became Ardwick Association Football Club in 1887 and was renamed Manchester City in 1894. The club won its first major trophy, the FA Cup, in 1904.

City experienced periods of success and struggle throughout the 20th century. They won league titles in 1937 and 1968, along with FA Cups in 1934, 1956, 1969, and League Cups in 1970 and 1976. However, the late 20th century saw a decline, with relegations in the 1980s and 1990s.

The club’s fortunes changed dramatically after Sheikh Mansour’s takeover in 2008. Heavy investment led to immediate improvements, culminating in their first Premier League title in 2012 under Roberto Mancini. Further success followed under Manuel Pellegrini, who secured another league title in 2014.
